The flagship headquarters of the Spinal Injuries Association in Milton Keynes has been designed for low energy consumption, use of renewable energy and accessibility.

Designed by architect Peter Hall, the building has no corridors, large areas of internal open space, and a largely glass exterior.

Building services consultant Malcolm Chard Associates specified Ex-Or lighting management and scene-setting systems throughout to ensure even light levels, no energy will be wasted and optimum light will be delivered automatically.

Daylight is maximised and suspended luminaires have been hung in parallel channels in the open plan areas. Each luminaire contains an Ex-Or MLS sensor to provide the presence and daylight regulating control required.

Other energy-saving features include solar collectors to supplement the hot water and high efficiency heating boilers.

Read-Flex was m&e contractor on the project.
