Southern Electric Contracting (SEC) has won a high voltage installation contract from National Wind Power for a new wind farm in Cornwall.
The Bears Down Wind Farm near Padstow has 16 wind turbines, each with a 600 kW capacity. SEC is installing transformers to boost each turbine's output from 690 V to 33 kV before the electricity passes to the main grid.
The transformers are being installed into the bases of the 35 and 30 metre-high tubular steel towers supporting the turbines rather than in separate enclosures, as is the traditional method. This has helped increase the area of usable surrounding farmland. The turbines will generate enough electricity to power every home in Newquay.
