China is setting the pace in solar power, with more than 35 million homes using solar hot water heaters.

In Rizhao in Shandong province, 99% of residents rely on solar energy for hot water and street lamps are solar powered. New Scientist magazine says Mayor Li Zhaoqian’s energy measures, including methane capture, have the backing of central government and the city is a model for green development in China.
