Leeds firm Yorkshire Building Services (YBS) increased its turnover from £9.8m to £16.8m in three years without taking on any more staff. How did it achieve such a feat? Finance director Paul Harrison says it’s all down to a £40,000 investment in software, Navision from Microsoft Business Solutions.

YBS had grown out of its accounts software and Harrison wanted something to allocate costs to specific contracts so that he could see which contracts were making money and which weren’t. This in turn would feed back into tendering.

Now, because the accounts department can process information more quickly, YBS is more efficient. The software frees up time by making information readily available. And it provides more detailed data, so that things like pricing variations are easier.

Navision isn’t construction-specific. It’s for firms turning over between £5m and £500m. You can bring in what bits you need: financial management, supply chain management, customer relationship management, payroll and e-business. And you can have bespoke add-ons to suit your company’s needs.

Over time Harrison plans to make more and more use of the software to link into estimating, orders and perhaps to get the project managers to use it remotelyLeeds firm Yorkshire Building Services (YBS) increased its turnover from £9.8m to £16.8m in three years without taking on any more staff.
