The use of services modules designed and prefabricated off site by MEP Solutions on a new office development for BSkyB has reduced installation time by 50%.

The latest development in the British Sky Broadcasting (BSkyB) empire was completed faster thanks to the use of prefabrication.

New Horizon Court in Brentford has been refurbished into three grade A offices to accommodate BSkyB executives, administration staff and production teams.

Meica Services co-ordinated and installed the m&e services on all three buildings. The services are based around ceiling-mounted chilled beams which comprise cooling and heating coils and are served by free cooling water chillers and boiler plant from a rooftop plantroom.

Around 60-70 of these Halton chilled beams have been fitted on each of the buildings’ floors, with the areas being zoned in three-beam sections.

Around 250 prefabricated m&e services modules designed and built by MEP Solutions have been used to connect 60-70% of the services on each floor. The L-shaped, box frame modules comprise pipework for chilled water and heating circuits, plus medium-duty electrical tray that is used as support for flexible Alupex pipework, which connects the manifold and chilled beams.

The modules are installed at ceiling height around the inner and outer perimeters of each floor. They are linked to the chilled beams by Alupex pipe. The remaining services have been installed by traditional methods due to structural considerations and layouts.

The modules were installed by the contractor at a rate of 15-20 modules per week, with overall services installation time 50% less than if traditional methods were used throughout.
