Glass film specialist, Lustalux Limited has completed a month-long project in Livingston, Scotland, where its technical team installed solar reflective film on a giant glass domed roof over a designer outlet.

McArthurGlen, which manages the site, contacted Lustalux to request assistance with the dome. The dome is the centrepiece of the ‘cathedral mall’ design but it was causing some problems with glare and solar heat gain.

To make conditions inside as pleasant and comfortable as possible, the client sought a solution that could be installed quickly and with minimal disruption.

The project posed a number of challenges: work had to be conducted at night, between midnight and 8am; a specially commissioned boom was needed to enable workers to reach every section of the 30 metre high structure; and there was a revolving mobile display hanging from the dome, which had to be safely negotiated.

Following a schedule developed with the McArthurGlen designer outlet, the team applied silver reflective solar control film to each individual panel and completed the job on time.

Heat gain through the dome has been significantly reduced, which has improved internal conditions and helped to reduce the load on air conditioning systems.

The problem of solar glare has been eliminated, with no substantial reduction in light transmission through the dome, so the outlet has retained its light and open atmosphere.

Lustalux senior technician, Rickey Sutton, said: ‘We’ve tackled all sorts of commercial and industrial projects in the past and we were confident that we could deliver exactly what the customer wanted.’
