Self-cleaning glass has previously been hindered by silicone sealants leaching across the glass. However, Pilkington thinks it has the answer, a silicone-free seal, which works with the self-cleaning glass not against it

The use of glass cladding is about to be revolutionised with the introduction of Pilkington Planar Activ. It combines the design capabilities of a glazing system that helped push the boundaries of glass design in buildings, with the company’s revolutionary dual action self-cleaning glass.

Uncompromising design is now possible where previously use of large glass areas may have been restricted by maintenance and cleaning access issues.

Planar Activ works with Pilkington Activ, which was introduced four years ago and was the world’s first self-cleaning glass. The glass has a permanent coating that uses natural elements to continuously clean the surface of the glass. Interest from designers increased as its potential for large, glass-clad structures, was realised.

Beat the grime

Traditionally such large expanses of glass have created significant cleaning problems, although this has always been balanced against the highly desirable aesthetics of glass. It has taken three years of development to produce a product for use in such environments.

Now a break through in sealant technology has enabled Planar Activ to reach the market. A range of silicone-free seals became available. They are crucial for weatherproofing the system and help to maintain the self-cleaning properties of the glass.

Planar Activ comes in a variety of performance and aesthetic options by combining glasses from the company’s range. These include solar and acoustic control, as well as improved thermal insulation and security versions, and in a range of colours.

A self-cleaning version of Pilkington Planar Integral, which holds the patented Planar fixings within the laminate, may be regarded, by some, as the perfect combination. It offers sealed glazing and a flush uninterrupted self-cleaning surface, in addition to the performance offered by other glasses used in the laminate.

The division responsible for the design, manufacture and supply of Planar systems is Pilkington Architectural. It offers a unique range of design and engineering services to professional designers and specifiers.
