The Shetland Museum and Archives has opened to the public.

Designed by architect the Building Design Partnership (BDP), with M&E consultancy by Faber Maunsell, the £11.6 million building includes a timber-clad, three-storey boat hall and archives for more than 3,000 artefacts. Weather conditions in the winter ruled out the use of passive measures to maintain the necessary archive conditions, so instead Faber Maunsell came up with a low-energy mechanical ventilation strategy.

Extensive daylight modelling was also carried out to minimise exposure of the exhibits to ultraviolet light.
