Work on the Shires shopping centre in Leicester has taken a step forward with the hoisting of a major steelwork frame.

Sir Robert McAlpine, main contractor on the £350m project, has put the frame in place to accommodate two glass lifts. The 20-tonne lift shafts were installed over two nights to avoid disruption to trading. They were manufactured in three sections by local firm Elsome Engineering. ‘Scenic lifts' will be installed in May and be operational by the end of August. The Shires Limited Partnership, a Hammerson-Hermes joint venture, is the developer and Cyril Sweett is the QS. The overall 60,000 sq m project to extend the existing Shires shopping centre is due for completion in 2008. It will provide 250 new homes and 2,500 jobs.
