Sense, the cost consultancy business of the Mace Group, has launched a research department in a bid to match the likes of Davis Langdon and EC Harris

The firm has appointed an economist from the Building Research Establishment (BRE), Anthony Waterman, to the new post of head of research.

Waterman has been charged with creating detailed benchmarks of fees and costs based on Mace's past projects.

Chris Goldthorpe, head of Sense, said: "The idea is to put our staff in front of clients armed with the best possible information."

Waterman will also carry out whole life cost assessments on Sense's live projects. At BRE he was head of the Economic Modelling Unit.

Meanwhile, Sense is continuing its expansion into the regions. The firm has hired Carl Patrick, formerly of Henry Riley, to lead the business's growth in Bristol and Bath. He will be based in Mace's Bristol office, where he will primarily target the public sector. His first assignment is the refurbishment of a concrete plant for Lafarge, which is due for completion in two years. Sense is working on a similar plant for Lafarge at Hope in the Peak District.
