Facilities at The University of Reading are based around three campuses – White Knights, Bulmershe Court and London Road – all of them located within ten minutes of the town centre.

Some 15,000 students and over 4,000 members of staff need to be protected at all times by a solid security system.

Although security officer patrols at night operate throughout the University’s 13 Halls of Residence, today’s students are bringing expensive equipment with them – notably laptop computers, mobile telephones, DVDs, CD and MP3 players – all of which will attract the would-be criminal.

To tighten up security in the main St Georges Hall student accommodation block, BMA Varsity – a local Salto Systems partner – was called in to install the Salto PRO-Access electronic locking system, featuring distributed intelligence in both the lock and the key, and 300 bespoke electronic handle sets with ten online wall readers.

The PRO-Access software enables the entire building to be operated by one database (although it’s powerful enough to control the entire campus) managing the electronic locks and Mifare proximity keycards for standalone, wire-free operation.
