The Security industry authority (SIA) has released the latest results of its activity under Operation Cornflower – the Regulator’s ongoing action targeting non-compliance of the Private Security Industry Act 2001 at public space surveillance CCTV suites covering shopping and retail outlets.

In three separate operations during the autumn, SIA investigators visited 25 CCTV suites in England and Wales run by operatives from 17 separate private security companies. Following these operations, investigators issued three warnings for offences relating to Section 3 of the Act (engaging in licensable conduct without a licence), 15 warnings for offences in conjunction with Section 5 of the Act (relating to the provision of unlicensed operatives) and nine Improvement Notices direct to security companies.

In addition, just prior to Christmas, investigators from the SIA – working alongside officers of the City of London Police – carried out licensing checks on 33 properties within the Square Mile to ensure that door staff were complying with the Private Security Industry Act 2001.

Of the 69 door supervisors checked, 62 held valid SIA licences but the remaining seven were warned for offences – six for working without an SIA licence, and the other for failure to display the licence while on duty.
