The government has poured scorn on claims that an extra 1 million homes will be needed in the next 20 years to accommodate refugees and migrant workers.
The Office of the Deputy Prime Minister has dismissed the figure, suggested by lobby group Migrationwatch. A spokesman said the statistics were confused and incomplete.

Bill Payne, chief executive of Yorkshire Housing, part of the Safehaven consortium for housing asylum seekers, said: "This is a manipulation of statistics to make a political point. It's not far removed from the attitude that 'they're coming over here to take our jobs and women'."
