Intrepid Security Solutions has seen a marked increase in the level of interest in its SmartTrack mobile robotic surveillance system following its appearance on a documentary about shop theft, says the company’s managing director Noel Verbruggen.

‘Dispatches: Secrets of the Shoplifters’ examined the staggering scale of shop theft which costs retailers and ultimately consumers billions of pounds every year. “While the general public largely consider shoplifting a trivial and ‘victim-less’ crime, the programme made the point that theft from stores is increasingly lining the pockets of drug addicts and gangs of organised criminals who are stealing to order,” Verbruggen said.

“The producers, as part of their research for the programme, visited our stand at IFSEC 2005. This gave us an opportunity to demonstrate to them the benefits of SmartTrack, not the least of which is its powerful deterrent effect. Would-be thieves cannot see where the camera is positioned on the track as it is hidden behind a tinted or mirrored enclosure.”

Intrepid has already received significant orders for SmartTrack from retailers including Asda, B&Q and Co-op.
