The £100 million Central Stepney Single Regeneration Bid (SRB) has seen the construction of around 450 new homes on the site of the Limehouse Fields Estate in London E1 for registered social landlords Circle 33 Housing Trust and Bethnal Green and Victoria Park Housing Association. The redevelopment has been designed using the ACPO endorsed Secured by Design (SBD) guidelines – the result of which has created innovative housing that has dramatically improved the safety and security of local residents.

In the case of the Stepney regeneration, the developers followed the SBD guidelines closely including the requirements for doors and windows. Here, highly specified windows, doors and ironmongery have been used to great effect. The Stepney project has universally adopted Solutia’s Saflex laminated glass anywhere the glass may be vulnerable to burglars. In accordance with SBD recommendations, glazed panels were laminated (outer pane) to a minimum thickness of 6.4mm and securely fixed in accordance with GGF guidelines.
