12:45PM Airline claims it can build Terminal 2 for £167m, a fraction of the current cost of the scheme

No-frills airline Ryanair is offering to build a cut-price version of Dublin airport's Terminal 2 for just £167m, less than a half of the current £400m price tag for the project. The firm said it had written to Dublin Airport Authority with the offer.

Ryanair opposes the DAA's own plan for the new terminal, citing excessive costs. In a statement it said the new terminal was "badly designed, in the wrong location" and was five times more expensive than other facilities in the UK and Europe.

The DAA denied Ryanair's claims this week. A spokesman told the Agence France Press newswire: "Ryanair tend to pluck inaccurate and spurious figures from the air to back up their own business arguments. We have submitted a planning application for a second terminal and as far as we are concerned that debate is over." Work is due to start on the project next year - the programme manager on the scheme is Turner & Townsend.
