BSRIA’s Rules of thumb provides a useful source of design data for every m&e engineer. In the third installment we take a look at equipment and solar loads, electrical systems and water consumption.
The third installment of BSRIA’s Rules of Thumb covers a number of areas: equipment and solar loads, electrical systems and water consumption.
Equipment and solar loads should be used for estimating the thermal loads used to assess plant and terminal equipment sizes. Electrical systems should be used to determine electrical supply requirements in buildings and should be used when assessing the connected capacity in terms of the floor area. Allowances for expansion, particularly for on-floor communications rooms should be borne in mind.
The data on water consumption should be used when determining user water needs and storage. It should be used from briefing onwards through to design and operation. Extraneous loads that may increase required pumping capacity/hours of operation need to be considered.
The data from the Rules of Thumb guide has been derived from a wide variety of sources all of which are clearly referenced in the actual publication.
Thumb rules can prove useful values to inform the early design process and are also useful for getting an intial grasp of services costs. The guide has also been assessed for usefulness and relevance by a panel of experienced, practising engineers.
