This month sees the first installment of BSRIA's Rules of thumb guidelines for building services, a useful source of design data for every m&e engineer.
Over the coming year BSj will be publishing extracts from BSRIA's fourth edition Rules of thumb guide. The purpose of the guide is to provide engineers in the initial stages of designing a building and its services with some of the most common 'rules of thumb' in one document.

These are a useful aid when it comes to tackling areas such as feasibility planning, assessing global loads, space requirements and the initial costs of the services.

The first installment looks at comfort factors. These should be used in the early stages of design when setting internal environmental conditions based on known or assumed loads. But bear in mind specific client requirements, and contexts that allow greater latitude in design settings.  The data from the Rules of thumb guide has been derived from a wide variety of sources all of which are clearly referenced in the actual publication. It has also been assessed for usefulness and relevance by a panel of experienced, practising engineers. Anyone wishing to purchase the complete Rules of thumb guide should contact the BSRIA bookshop on 01344 426511 or visit www.bsria.co.uk
