Most technical apprenticeship schemes attract very few young women and the security systems apprenticeship is no exception, says Skills for Security.
However, perhaps things are about to change," says the industry's training organisation. "We are delighted to celebrate the success of two young ladies who have just completed their Advanced Apprenticeships with Skills for Security and wish them every success in their future careers."
Nicola O'Higgins of Chubb Electronic Ltd and Sabrina Long of Sector Alarms Ltd have worked hard to achieve both Level 2 and Level 3 NVQ awards as well as the City and Guilds 1852 qualification during their apprenticeship.
"They are a credit to themselves, their employers and the industry and provide a role model for others to follow" says SFS.
Sabrina said that she found the work both challenging and rewarding. She found the learning matched directly to work she undertook and was impressed with the new facilities at Waltham Forest College.
Nicola found that the apprenticeship has provided her with many options for the future and she valued the opportunity to learn while working. She didn't find that being in a male dominated working environment presented her with any problems and found the work challenging and fun. Both said they would recommend the scheme to other females seeking a technical career.
Congratulating them, SFS’s Noel Sargent, said potential apprentices should also contact local employers since all apprentices must be employed to take part in the scheme. Information: tel SFS on 01905 74404
