With less than two weeks to go until the 2006 Security Excellence Awards Ceremony, Brian Sims reviews the final preparations being made ahead of the biggest night in the security industry’s packed calendar.

Hollywood has been noted for producing a fair few ‘Blockbuster’ movies over the years and, in celebration of that great tradition, the 2006 Security Excellence Awards Ceremony – organised by CMP Information security titles Security Management Today (SMT), Security Installer and Platform – is using the film theme as the backdrop to the industry’s biggest and best night out! And why not? After all, the Awards are the Oscars of the security world!

When our guests arrive at The Hilton Hotel on London’s Park Lane on the evening of Wednesday 11 October, they’ll be greeted by the red carpet treatment and the ‘Paparazzi’! On entering The Hilton, they will be directed to a glitzy drinks reception where it’s possible to mingle with Hollywood stars of past and present, including icons like Marilyn Monroe and Johnny Depp.

Having been directed to their seats in The Grand Ballroom by Legion Security’s SIA-licensed officers for a sumptuous four-course meal, it’s then time to sit back, relax with some fine wines and good company and pay tribute to the security sector’s star performers!

The Awards do have a serious message to impart in that we want to impress upon everyone present the great importance of first class security provision in an environment where terrorism is never far from the doorstep. We are also desperately keen to raise as much money as we can for this year’s nominated charity, Hear4U (a 24-hour telephone HelpLine and website designed to assist members of the industry who have been disadvantaged in some way to make a speedy recovery and return to work).

John Purnell, current Master of The Company of Security Professionals for 2006-2007, will be giving a short presentation relevant to the charity’s excellent work. We hope you’ll find it interesting and well worth supporting.

When the Awards Ceremony is over, there’ll be dancing until the early hours, with music supplied by our resident DJ. And don’t forget the Charity Casino, which is always a popular event on the night. The money we raise here will be put towards the running costs needed for Hear4U.

The BBC’s in the house!

Security Management Today is pleased to announce that this year’s presenter for the Security Excellence Awards is none other than Jeremy Vine, the celebrated and award-winning BBC News journalist and broadcaster who joined the Corporation in 1987. Jeremy is famed for his work on Newsnight with Jeremy Paxman and Kirsty Wark, and his most recent role presenting The Politics Show on BBC1. He also hosts a regular Current Affairs slot on Radio 2.

We are also delighted to confirm that BT redcare and Dedicated Micros have decided to join our impressive list of sponsors, which now stretches to 13 of the industry’s foremost organisations. We certainly have come a long way from the inaugural lunchtime gathering at The Four Seasons Hotel way back in 1999!

Our other sponsors for the 2006 Security Excellence Awards are the Security Industry Authority, Skills for Security, Panasonic (UK), Over-C, the British Security Industry Association, Prima Corporate Wear, Southern and Northern Monitoring Services, ACPO Crime Prevention Initiatives, MITIE Security, Kings Security and G4S Security Services (UK).

The judging process has finished, and The Security Watchdog has now carried out its Silver Fox Audits on the six finalists in this year’s Best Guarding Company category.
