World Without End, by Ken Follett, Published by Macmillan, £20 (hardback)

This sequel to cult favourite The Pillars of the Earth – which chonicled the construction of a cathedral in epic detail – continues the theme by making one of the four main characters a builder. Don’t expect too many parallels with your daily routine, however, as the tale is set in the Middle Ages, beginning in 1327.

At 1111 pages, this is a hefty read but if you enjoy a gripping yarn, with plenty of historical detail and a few saucy bits, this could well be the bedtime book for you.
