An estimated 60,000 protestors vented their fury last month in Brussels over an EU directive that some believe could have severe consequence on the industry. Commonly known as the Bolkestein - or Frankenstein to its critics – directive, it aims to free services around the EU’s single market by allowing countries to provide services under rules set in their own country, rather than regulations set in the country they intend to work. Some say it will lead to a lowering of standards such as health and safety. Supporters respond that it could create 600,000 jobs and that it would be impossible to compile a list of standards or laws that would cover every service in Europe.

The directive receives its first reading in June.
