The Collection, Lincoln
WHAT: The new home of Lincoln City and County Museum, a collection of archaeological and historical artefacts that has been renamed The Collection. The museum sits in the shadow of Lincoln Cathedral and links to an arts centre next door, the Usher Gallery and the adjoining Temple Gardens.
WHEN: Building work started in August 2003 and the museum opened on 1 October.
HOW MUCH: £12m
WHO: QS: Burke Hunter Adams, PM: Focus Consultants, Nottingham, architect: Panter Hudspith, contractor: Caddick, client: partnership between Lincolnshire city and county councils.
ISSUES: “We found a mosaic in the foundations on the last day of the archaeological watch. This lead to a five-day delay while we extracted it piecemeal. Now the mosaic has pride of place in our main visitor's gallery” – William Mason, commercial director, The Collection
DETAILS: The project replaces the Lincoln City and County Museum, which opened in 1906, and encompasses the Usher Gallery next door. The city and county councils decided that art and archaeology would make a complimentary mix. The building has a contemporary feel but was designed to fit its historic surroundings. It is faced in Lincolnshire limestone and the roof has been made to look like lead to compliment the roof of the nearby cathedral.
