Perth Concert Hall, Scotland

WHAT: The first concert hall to be built in Scotland since 1990. Includes 1,200 seats, a foyer, box office and an auditorium, which switches between raked seating and a flat floor.

WHEN: Opens to the public today. Work on the scheme began in 2003 .

WHERE: Horsecross, a historic part of Perth, now undergoing extensive urban regeneration.

HOW: The type of procurement used was a design-managed contract with a guaranteed maximum price. The building is the brainchild of architects Building Design Partnership, whose Glasgow office won a competition in 1998 to design the scheme. A key challenge was decontamination work, which was needed to rid the site of hydrocarbons created by a dry cleaner formerly occupying the area. This was achieved by injecting microbes into the ground.

VALUE: The overall project cost was £17m, of which £12.5m was spent on construction.

WHO: Client: Perth and Kinross Leisure,

QS: Gardiner & Theobald, PM: Gardiner & Theobald Management Services, architect: BDP, design and build contractor: Sir Robert McAlpine, C&S and M&E consultant: Buro Happold.
