Dispelling the myth
Samsung Techwin describes its new SDC-415 day/night camera as "groundbreaking" because it dispels the myth that day/night cameras are expensive and therefore can only be used for a limited number of applications.
The camera is said to be packed full of high spec features but at "a price tag that matches basic monochrome cameras offered by our competitors".
The SDC-415 switches from colour during the day to night mode when light levels fall below 0.3 lux. SNR technology reduces noise so that the SDC-415 delivers high quality images regardless of the lighting conditions and also reduces file sizes of recorded images.
It offers 520 TV lines and wide dynamic range as standard.

Dome for the network
Pelco has launched an addition to its Endura product family, the Spectra III EVS (Endura Video System).
This "combines the world's most popular high performance integrated dome system with Endura, the leading edge, high quality network based video security solution".
Spectra III EVS offers built-in blackbox memory, seven alarm inputs and an auxiliary output all while delivering the "smooth, quick responsiveness" of a Spectra III.
It provides dual MPEG-4 streams and can process up to 30 high quality 4CIF images per second per stream. Built in motion adaptive interlacing reduces jitter. The dome attaches to a network via a standard RJ-45 connector and MPEG-4 video stream output can be routed to an Endura NVR or any other devices that reside on the network.

Compact network dome
Axis Communications has launched the Axis 216FD Fixed Dome Network Camera, described as "compact and discreet".
Its protection against tampering is said to make it ideal for indoor installations, especially retail and education establishments.
It has a varifocal DC-iris lens with progressive scan and up to 30 frames per second in VGA resolution. Advanced image processing gives "crisp and clear images" even in low light conditions, and it uses simultaneous Motion JPEG and MPEG-4 video streams for image quality and bandwidth efficiency.

More than a mirror
A new vehicle based covert CCTV device has been introduced by MEL Secure Systems.
Designed primarily for enforcement agencies, it enables vehicles to be equipped with miniature cameras located inside wing mirrors.
The camera is mounted behind a glass mirror specially manufactured for the application. Infrared illuminators can be added for low light conditions.
Recordings can be stored on a 12V DVR inside the vehicle or transmitted via COFDM links to a receiver up to 4km away.
They can be used for covert ANPR and other surveillance applications. It can also be used to enhance security for high value vehicles.

24-hour surveillance
The new 81 series of cameras from Merit-Li-Lin is said to provide "remarkable" low light performance. The Super High Resolution cameras using Sony 1/3 inch Super-HAD or Ex-View CCD technology have an IR CUT Filter that automatically switches between daytime colour and night time mono. Because they are highly sensitive the cameras are suitable for applications that need 24hr surveillance.
Eight privacy masking zones are designed to meet data protection requirements. Cameras have optional on-screen settings and functions using the OSD menu setup. Digital Signal Processing also provides benefits such as Dynamic Edge Enhancement and Back Light Compensation.

Console bridges gap
NetVu Console from Dedicated Micros is a powerful remote viewing station which is a non-PC based alternative to remote viewing and telemetry control over the network.
It has "minimal" installation requirements and consists of a traditional telemetry KBS3A keyboard and a single channel decoder unit which, when combined with a standard monitor, provides a remote viewing point on the CCTV system, such as a guard station in the outer reaches of a building complex.
Connected to any NetVu Connected DVR or server via an IP connection, it allows additional control stations to be quickly deployed without the need to retrain operators or guards. A total of 256 cameras can be controlled from one remote point.

Unattended bags spotted
CCTV footage is digitally analysed using "groundbreaking" Artificial Intelligence technology from DigiSys (UK).
DigiSys IQ is designed to boost security and public safety with an electronic eye that is able to detect incidents often missed by operators or simply impossible to see on a monitoring screen.
The company says it is the first surveillance software in Europe to use internationally patented Non Motion Detection (NMD) software.
It can detect objects placed in or removed from busy areas - regardless of constant movement in the field of vision - including identifying unattended bags in public places and spotting art thefts from galleries.

See above the horizon
The King is a new "plug and go" CCTV Pan & Tilt head from Croma Shawley. It features camera/lens, camera telemetry receiver and power supply within the distinctive body.
Designed for new installations or upgrades, it brings a "fresh new approach to CCTV with the most original concept in PTZ for years," says the company.
Conceived by Mel Elford, Croma Shawley's technical director, it combines the attributes of a traditional pan & tilt with the technology benefits of a combined camera and lens concept. Within the body is a Sony module colour/mono camera with various optical zoom options. The King provides 360 deg full rotational pan and a 180 deg tilt - "a feature lacking in conventional speed domes" says the company.
This allows operators to see above the horizon and track more extensively.

No moving parts
A digital PTZ device eliminates the need for moving parts in the latest Axis Communications network camera.
AXIS 212 Pan/Tilt/Zoom Network Camera provides instant PTZ as well as automatic patrolling, and eliminating the need for moving parts has also made the camera highly reliable, says the company.
It allows users to see the entire field of view on a single monitor. Specific areas of interest can then be selected with the single click of a mouse and the camera instantly goes to the designated area.
The 212 PTZ has a high quality, 3-megapixel sensor and wide angle lens and is said to be ideal for monitoring areas up to 159 sq m such as shops and reception areas.

Cabling revolution
BPT Security Systems (UK) Ltd has launched XUP, which it says "revolutionises the cabling of a video entry system".
Instead of utilising a dedicated multicore cable to carry signals to and from the door entry system, XUP has been designed to use the existing TV coaxial cable in a building. This cable has plenty of unused bandwidth and can carry all signals at high frequencies without interference or disturbance.
BPT says the advantages are that costs are reduced due to utilisation of existing cable, and installation time is cut. XUP provides a selection of entry panels and monitor styles.
