This month I would like to address the subject of convergence between the ECA and HVCA.

In May this year we outlined our programme of joint working with the HVCA to tackle sustainability. In addition, there has been considerable focus on a possible convergence between the two bodies.

We have enjoyed a close working relationship with the HVCA for over three decades. Indeed, during that period, many influences have caused a progressive convergence of both the h&v and the electrical sectors.

Given the productive relationship that has been forged, particularly in recent years, arguments for joint working grow evermore apparent and have led us to examine the scope for taking this co-operation further.

There is increasing demand by clients for integrated m&e solutions and a strong belief that a representative body for the building services sector will carry more weight in lobbying.

We are in the very early stages of a complex consultation exercise, aimed at bringing electrical and mechanical interests under a single roof – not a merger but a convergence of the Associations to create a single organisation. The process will take time and we will ensure that proposals developed are discussed fully with the entire membership and that any resulting changes are in the interests of single discipline electrical and mechanical firms, as well as those that work in both sectors.
