Our joint Health and Safety conference in September underlines our work with HVCA to promote health and safety within the industry.

The event will also mark the launch of important new health and safety competency criteria for contractors and clients. We are in full support of one set of core criteria for the industry and see this as a positive step to cut out unnecessary form filling and bureaucracy.

Carrying on the theme of safety, the ECA has also lent its support to the new Corporate Manslaughter and Corporate Homicide Bill. We hope the Bill will lead to improvements in this very difficult area of safety law and we welcome efforts by government to properly address corporate responsibility for a major failing in health and safety management.

A key test in the Bill is legal compliance and companies that shy away from health and safety management will be most vulnerable to this new legislation. ECA members already display very high standards of safety performance, of which we are proud.

Companies that make an honest attempt to follow health and safety regulations or to meet the new contractors’ competency criteria should have nothing to fear.
