It is gratifying that in my first ECA presidential view I am able to congratulate the ECA and its members for the continued improvement in safety performance.

Since the ECA launched its Zero Accident Potential (ZAP) campaign in 2001, there has been a reduction of over 26% in the number of reportable accidents up to the end of 2004. Considering major accidents, the reduction is even greater – an impressive 61% against a target of 40% reduction by the end of 2005.

This is very good news. It proves that ECA members take health and safety at work very seriously and also demonstrates their professionalism.

The latter is important because it underlines the reasons why choosing an ECA member makes sense: professionalism and technical competence. Here, improved health and safety performance not only provides the immeasurable benefit of saving lives and preventing injuries, but also gives ECA members a commercial advantage.

Our safety performance has improved dramatically. The setting of new ZAP targets for 2010 will ensure that we do not become complacent. I am convinced that by working together we can make real progress towards a target of zero serious accidents to operatives working for ECA member companies.
