A pirate radio DJ has been banned from rooftops over four storeys in a case that demonstrates how antisocial behaviour orders can help housing providers to outlaw illegal transmissions.

Magistrates last week agreed to Tower Hamlets council’s request to impose the five-year, borough-wide ban against 23-year-old Dean Fullman, aka DJ Slimzee. He can break it only with signed and dated permission.

A spokesman for radio regulator Ofcom said it hoped that ASBOs to keep DJs away from public housing blocks would become the norm. Last week’s order follows one in Wood Green, north London, last month, which was the first time the order was used against a pirate DJ.

“We are really trying to get the message across to the pirate radio community that local authorities can go for an ASBO against them now,” he said.

Housing authorities and Ofcom have an ongoing programme to convict pirate radio DJs because they claim they cause criminal damage to property by erecting transmitting masts, interfere with the television signals of residents and threaten housing staff.

Fullman, who transmitted Rinse FM from the roof of a tower block in Stepney, admitted causing £10,000 worth of damage by erecting the mast.
