Piper Double Glazing Limited has achieved the first ‘A’ rated window under the Window Energy Ratings system, due for inclusion in the Building Regulations from April.
The Veka fabricator achieved a Window Energy Rating of +4, which is the highest on the scheme to date. The specialist commercial window contractor, based Ramsgate, Kent, achieved the rating with its standard PVC-U window frame, made from Veka’s Matrix 70mm suite. This was triple glazed
The configuration of the double glazed unit is: Pilkington Optiwhite outer and middle panes, Pilkington K inner pane; Edgetech Super Spacer; both the outer and middle chambers are argon gas filled; the IG unit is 44mm wide (3 x 16mm), so a slightly slimmer bead is used. To obtain the rating, Veka performed the calculations, which were then certified by the British Board of Agrément.
Workable
Dr Robin Kent of the British Fenestration Council says that the Piper/VEKA achievement shows that the standard is completely attainable and workable: ‘The performance of the Piper window is excellent and, perhaps more importantly, demonstrates what can be achieved in a commercially available product that is ready for market now.’
Alistair Craig, Piper Windows General Manager, says that he and his colleagues are delighted at the achievement: ‘This places Piper Windows at the cutting edge of window development. In close partnership with Veka we have achieved a performance that not even the BFRC believed to be possible at this time.’
The currently unbranded ‘A spec window’ was developed after an enquiry from a council for an energy efficient window. Piper has had further enquiries since getting it certified.
