A petition calling for the term ‘engineer’ to be protected has been launched on the Prime Minister’s e-petitions website.

Engineer Jon Jennings, who set up the petition, was spurred into action by what he perceives as a ‘lack of respect’ for engineers at all levels of UK society, with car mechanics, plumbers and electricians commonly referred to as engineers. The petition demands professional status for engineers and engineering.

The Institution of Structural Engineers said it applauded the motivation behind the petition having previously raised the issue of engineers’ professional status with key UK government departments.

The petition now has over 23, 000 signatories, indicating a growing body of support. It now appears as the eighth most popular petition out of the 4877 available on the website.
