I would like to commend the "women's issue" (21 November) as well as Housing Today's interest in personal development.

I work part-time as a regional basic skills coordinator for Stonham Housing Association and came into this role because my employer recognised my transferable skills from my diverse background.

The whole organisation is set up to support and recognise social capital for prospective employees as well as that of the service users we support.

My role is flexible because this housing association is committed to getting the best out of all employees.

Creating a "force to be reckoned with" is about making the most of all opportunities and welcoming the diversity of skills female and male employees have to offer.

The changes in flexible working, flexible study, the variety of childcare and legislation all make it easier and more achievable for women and companies alike to get best value out of the work/life balance.

Providing there is always a balance between what is "in it" for you and for your employer, career progression, study or other interests only strengthen your position in the workforce.
