Yes, there are indeed too many families waiting for suitable housing. There are also thousands of pensioners and/or single people living in three-bedroom houses where the rent is paid by way of housing benefit.

How can such a situation be tolerated?

I would not want to anybody to be evicted but if people choose to remain in those circumstances then their local authorities should limit the under-occupying tenants’ entitlement to full housing benefit.

The difference would have to be found from these tenants’ own pockets – and we all know how that concentrates minds.
