Are you inspired by this week’s exploration of the construction market in India? Here, Building offers advice
When in India…
Are you inspired by this week’s exploration of the construction market in India? We can offer some advice to anyone thinking of making the trip, writes Deborah Duke.
Eleven years ago, Building published a handy guide for UK construction folk who were tempted to travel to India to get in on the building boom – but as well as providing information about markets, clients and construction practices, it gave some handy tips on how to fit in with the locals.
Feasting seemed to be on the menu – as the article advised: “It is impolite to turn down food if you are a guest in somebody’s house, even if you have already eaten and are full.” And remember: “Burp after a meal – it’s a sign of enjoyment.”
In downtime from construction pursuits, it recommended: “Play golf on the highest golf course in the world at Gulmarg, party at a ‘full moon party’ in Goa, snorkel in the Andaman Islands, visit the Taj Mahal in Agra or go clubbing at Elevate in Delhi – it boasts the world’s ‘fastest and most powerful body sonic dance floor’ .”
That’s quite the work trip. After all that clubbing, maybe UK expats wanting to cool off would even need to note the article’s stern warning: “Nude bathing is illegal.”
