Many homeowners do not have a clue how to carry out the simplest household tasks, according to a survey carried out by the ECA.

In a poll of 500 people, one in five admitted they were unable to wire a plug.

In addition, more than a quarter of those surveyed couldn’t bleed a radiator, and a third didn’t know how to turn off their gas supplies.

Even more remarkably, one in 16 said they had no idea how to change a light bulb.

Despite the constant pressure on homeowners to monitor and reduce the amount of energy they consume within their homes, nearly a third didn’t understand how to change the temperature on their central heating systems.

Knowledge of other basic tasks was also lacking. Many respondents could not change a fuse or unblock a sink.

One in five claimed they were unable to read their gas or electricity meters, while a fifth confessed to not knowing how to turn off their water supply.

A further 41% said they didn’t know how to operate their burglar alarm correctly.
