A new public-private advisory board is to be set up to help manage the timing of large building programmes.

The move comes after a review of the capacity of the construction market and means that panels could be installed in government departments to anticipate construction bottlenecks.

The Office of Government Commerce (OGC) told construction bigwigs that many departments failed to notify them in good time about big building programmes. As a result, suppliers were not able to anticipate demands for materials, leading to delays.

“When a project is a twinkle in a department’s eye it needs to be thinking of the best way of getting the industry to help plan the programme – the industry can then give its view on whether the plans are feasible,” said Sally Fryer, of the OGC.
