Over 75% of Europe's office lighting is wasting energy and failing to meet quality standards according to research carried out by Philips Lighting. The offending lighting installations are based on outdated and energy inefficient systems that do not comply with EU quality standards for offices (EN 12464-1).
The Dutch lighting giant forecasts that a total cost saving of between one and two billion euro could be achieved annually if this energy wasting lighting was to be replaced. In addition, the environmental savings in CO2 emissions would equate to the planting of more than 300 million trees - the equivalent of two trees for every household in the EU.
The payback on new systems is on average about three years, which compares favourably with the average renovation cycle of 15 years. In addition, studies have shown that office workers feel better when working under good quality lighting, thus reducing levels of absenteeism, producing greater motivation and productivity.
