Professor Victor Torrance CBE

The world of construction has lost a great champion with the passing of Professor Victor Torrance (FCIOB, FCMI, FRSA, HON MRICS), a past president of the CIOB.

Torrance began his career as a lecturer at Singapore University in 1966 and in his 40-year career became a stalwart of the academic community and was highly respected around the world. He became Professor in the Department of Building at Heriot-Watt University in 1972 where he spent nearly 20 years before moving on to Loughborough, then UCL London and finally, since 1996, to Malaysia at the Universiti Teknologi MARA Shah Alam, Selangor.

He was instrumental in setting up the CIOB in both Malaysia and Singapore.

His CBE in 1991 for his contribution to academia and industry was richly deserved, and was followed a year later by an award for his Outstanding Contribution to the Scottish Construction Industry by the Scottish branch of the CIOB.

He will be sadly missed and remembered by many. He leaves his wife, Madinah.
