January brought news for which many in the industry have been busy preparing: a new generation of nuclear power stations will be built in the UK.

There could be up to 12 built, with the first starting in 2011 at the earliest and each expected to cost £2bn-£3bn.

The government will not be putting a penny of public money towards them, with power companies having to fund them all. The question of who will pay what towards storing the waste has yet to be addressed, however, as has the problem of where to put it.

Contractors and consultants have been eager to publicise their nuclear expertise, with firms including Balfour Beatty, Costain, Turner & Townsend, Parsons Brinvkerhooff, Halcrow and Currie and Brown all coming forward to comment.
