12:00PM Government to contribute £437m to scheme. Work could start in 2010

The government yesterday backed an extension planned for the Nottingham tram network. Transport minister Douglas Alexander announced he would be providing £437m funds for the scheme, which consists of two extensions to go to the Chilwell/Beeston districts and Clifton.

Nottingham City Council and Nottinghamshire County Council are now set to start working on detailed designs for the scheme. A government statement said subject to conditions for funding approval being satisfied and costs being kept under control, work could start in 2010.

Alexander said: "The Nottingham tram has been a great success in encouraging people on to public transport. These extensions provide the opportunity to continue this success."
