A housing association THAT plans to set up a homeless hostel in Notting Hill has reacted with surprise to a petition from residents opposing the project.

Residents of Pembridge Square, west London, said they had not been consulted about the plan to convert a former block of accommodation for foreign students at Wetherby School into a hostel for 17 families.

However Field Lane Housing Association held a meeting for residents last Wednesday night.

A spokesman for Field Lane said he was “puzzled” about the petition.

He said: “The project will offer families a stable environment where they can address the issues relating to their homelessness.”

One local resident said: “They have to be housed somewhere but I do not think people will be happy.

“The only thing one can do is speak to people in the housing department and say that, if these people don’t behave properly, we want them out.”
