Mace board director Gary France has launched a professional body for planning engineers. The Planning Engineers Organisation, which France has so far funded from his own pocket, aims to share best practice.
Existing bodies such as the Association for Project Management have special interest groups for planners but France, who is chairman of PEO, says that he did not want to battle institution bureaucracy in order to raise the profile of planning engineers.
To become a Member or Fellow of PEO, applicants must fill out an extensive application form which includes a detailed case study. They must also submit a dissertation on a planning-related subject, which may be published on the PEO website. The first 50 to be accepted will be Founder Members and receive three years’ free membership.
