PCKO Architects' Newhall housing development in Harlow, Essex, has won the gold standard at CABE's Building for Life awards.
The scheme includes a five-storey tower inspired by Essex's metal-clad windmills, and most units have a 1 m-deep "living wall" that provides flexible space for services and storage. Its 74 homes are built at the high density of 38 units/ha. It was developed by Newhall Projects and Cala Domus with Roger Evans Associates as masterplanner, Michael Dudfield Associates as structural engineer and Turner Wright and Partners as services engineer.
