1960s-built Octagon Theatre in Bolton to be enlarged and modernised
Willmott Dixon has been picked for an £8.5m contract to enlarge and modernise the 1960s-built Octagon Theatre in Bolton.
The project will improve accessibility and accommodation for the theatre’s on and off-stage theatre projects.
Architect for the scheme is Feilden Clegg Bradley Studios. Project manager is Gardiner & Theobald.
The project scope includes refurbishing the existing theatre, studio, foyer, back of house and administration areas, and creating two multi-purpose studio spaces for rehearsals, participation activities and performances. Large sections around the core of the theatre’s auditorium will be demolished and rebuilt. The scheme also includes installation of air conditioning and new seating.
The contract was procured by Bolton Metropolitan Borough Council, procured through Scape Group’s major works framework.
Willmott Dixon previously carried out the redevelopment of the nearby Bolton Albert Halls, a grade II listed building which was part of a wider town centre master plan.
