Sir Richard Branson says he would bid for Gatwick but only as part of a consortium
Virgin Atlantic has confirmed its interest in bidding for Gatwick airport, but only as part of a consortium.
Sir Richard Branson told the Daily Telegraph: “we are open to being courted by anyone who is interested in bidding [for Gatwick]”.
His announcement comes two weeks after the Competition Commission announced that BAA may have to sell three of its UK airports.
According to press reports, Branson has already held talks with potential bidders, thought to include funds backed by the Dubai royal family.
The Competition Commission is expected to make its final judgement in February next year.
