Stephen Barter to be replaced by John Wallace as UK chief executive of developer
Qatari Diar have announced that Stephen Barter, chief executive of Qatari Diar in the UK, has stepped down.
He has been replaced by John Wallace, the company’s former managing director.
The developer behind the Shard and controversial Chelsea Barracks development said that Barter had decided to “pursue new opportunities”.
Barter was at the helm during the damaging court wrangle with the Candy brothers centred on claims the Prince of Wales had pressured Qatari Diar to withdraw from the project.
Wallace was part of a trail of emails among senior Qatari Diar figures that expressed fears that the Prince’s opposition to the modernist development could trigger the rejection of the planning application.
In a statement, Qatari Diar said: “We can confirm that Stephen Barter will be leaving his post as CEO of Qatari Diar UK.
“Stephen has taken the decision to pursue new opportunities elsewhere and we would like to thank him for his contribution throughout last year.
“John Wallace will assume overall responsibility as CEO for all matters within the UK office, with immediate effect.”
