Plans include the refurbishment of 30 stations and the upgrade of 11 lifts and 13 escalators.

Tube Lines has announced it is to spend £150m refurbishing 30 stations. The work will also include the upgrade of 11 lifts, 13 escalators and the installation of two lifts for mobility impaired passengers.

Roy Porter, senior devlivery manager at Tube Lines, said: “This is a massive undertaking not seen on the Underground before: every night we will have in the region of 1,500 people carrying out important improvement work at stations across the Jubilee, Northern and Piccadilly line network.”

Porter said this compared with only 100 people when it took over the line in January 2003.

The work will include new train indicator displays, new stairs and floor surfaces for the visually impaired, new CCTV and PA systems.

Tube Lines is committed to modernising or refurbishing 97 of the 100 stations under its responsibility by 2010. It has completed the upgrade of ten stations and is due to complete a further ten stations by April 2006.
