Budding Brunels project aims to interest school leavers in construction

The Construction Youth Trust (CYT) is appealing to charity trusts, industry bodies and companies to encourage young people’s interest in construction.

The Budding Brunels pilot scheme will allow schoolchildren in Year 12 (16-17 year olds) to take part in activities including visiting building and engineering sites and seeing materials testing laboratories.

The CYT is currently looking for interested parties to donate financial assistance to the scheme and to provide support by giving presentations in participating schools.

The project will involve the children taking part in weekly sessions of one to two hours held during the school term but outside school hours, although some topics will be connected within General Studies.

Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB) deputy chief executive Michael Brown said in support of the scheme: “If you ask a school pupil to name a famous builder or engineer most of them would say Brunel, and yet he was born over 200 years ago. We clearly need to do more as an industry to give younger people greater understanding of the exciting opportunities in building and engineering.”
