RIBA forum to address how the institute and architectural community can best support students through tough times

As part of its ongoing work to tackle pay and conditions issues for architecture students, the RIBA will be hosting a forum to discuss how the institute and wider architectural community can best support them through tough times.

Tough Times: RIBA’s Architecture and Low Pay Student Forum on 21 June is open to students from UK schools of architecture.

Chaired by architect Niall McLaughlin, the forum invites students to discuss the RIBA’s recent initiatives to improve pay and conditions in practice, and input into future policies with RIBA staff, practitioners and students from other schools.

Other topics to be discussed include employment options, alternative career paths for graduates, and how to survive architectural education in a new era of university financing

In March 2011, RIBA president Ruth Reed announced an important change in the organisation’s chartered practice criteria, committing every RIBA chartered practice to paying the statutory minimum wage to students undertaking work eligible to count towards their PEDR requirement.

The student forum forms part of a series of in-depth consultations taking place throughout 2011 with students of architecture, RIBA chartered practice and other key stakeholders to discuss ways to improve pay and conditions in practice, and to consider appropriate rates of pay for students and graduates that are higher than the statutory minimum wage.
