Insurgents abduct workers building military base in Farah, Afghanistan
More than 140 construction workers on a military base in Afghanistan have been abducted by Taliban insurgents.
The workers, travelling in three buses, were kidnapped on Sunday while travelling between their homes and the military base in Farah, in the west of Afghanistan.
Rohul Amin, the provincial governor of Farah, told Reuters: “Negotiations are under way by elders to release the innocent workers. We want to solve this issue peacefully without involving the military.”
The mass abduction is not the only recent incident of construction workers being targeted by the Taliban. Five Afghan guards were killed in a Taliban attack on Monday in the south-eastern province of Paktia.
